This is the first in a series of posts where I aim to make an FPS game based in the Willamette Parkview Mall from the original Dead Rising game.
During this series I will be trying to recreate parts of the mall using Blender and Substance Painter before moving them into Unreal Engine 5 where I will make it into a playable FPS zombie game.
I hope to use this project mainly to improve my environment art skills. Although I am a developer I love the environmental side of game creation too. I am particularly keen to learn how to create atmosphere in environments and make them feel real and interesting.
The original Dead Rising game had a beautiful and interesting setting which I’ve always felt would be amazing for an FPS horror type game. I would like to try and use modern lighting techniques, high res textures and various other effects to recreate this environment, giving it more of a horror game feel in the process.
I will be spending a small amount of time on this project each week so planning will be an important part of making this happen. I hope to use this project to improve my planning and organisation skills and to get more proficient at creating basic FPS systems from scratch using blueprints in Unreal Engine.
